Kripkean conceivability and epistemic modalities

چکیده
In this article, I show that (i) from what call a “Kripkean” account of the relations between conceivability and metaphysical necessities, (ii) an apparently plausible principle relating epistemic modality, (iii) duality modalities, one can utterly anti-Kripkean result every necessity is necessity. My aim to present diagnose problem evaluate costs some possible Kripkean reactions. particular, will consequences theoretical rejecting main ingredients argument, namely we cannot genuinely conceive negations there no postulated relation possibility (actually, unconceivability impossibility), are not dualities.

Graded Modalities in Epistemic Logic
We propo~ an epistemic logic with so-called graded modalities, in which certain types of knowledge are expressible that are less absolute than in traditional epistemic logic. Beside 'absolute knowledge' (which does not allow for any exception), we a r e also able to express 'accepting r if there at most n exceptions to r This logic may be employed in decision support systems where there are dif...
متن کاملComplex Epistemic Modalities in the Situation Calculus
We develop a formal account of complex group-level epistemic modalities in the situation calculus, with a particular focus on reasoning about common knowledge. Expressions involving common knowledge cannot be handled by standard regression techniques and are thus difficult to reason about effectively. Taking our cue from recent promising work in dynamic epistemic logic, we overcome this limitat...
متن کاملSpatial and Epistemic Modalities in Constraint-Based Process Calculi
We introduce spatial and epistemic process calculi for reasoning about spatial information and knowledge distributed among the agents of a system. We introduce domain-theoretical structures to represent spatial and epistemic information. We provide operational and denotational techniques for reasoning about the potentially infinite behaviour of spatial and epistemic processes. We also give comp...
متن کاملConceivability and Modal Knowledge
in a broader context of arguing against the view that conceivability provides epistemic access to the metaphysical modalities. His goal is “to identify the sources and forms of our knowledge of metaphysical possibility and metaphysical necessity” (205). 1 The account proceeds in two stages. First, he contends that “metaphysical necessity and metaphysical possibility can be reductively explained...
متن کاملTarskian and Kripkean truth
A theory of the transfinite Tarskian hierarchy of languages is outlined and compared to a notion of partial truth by Kripke. It is shown that the hierarchy can be embedded into Kripke’s minimal fixed point model. From this results on the expressive power of both approaches are obtained.
